I've lost count of the number of times I've felt let down by a travel brochure or a guidebook. You know what I mean, when you feel a restaurant review probably belonged to a chef long since gone, or when the pictures of your hotel bear no relation whatsoever to the concrete block you've booked into. I adore travelling, but there's nothing more frustrating than spending my precious holiday time in the wrong places.

So what do I do when I go travelling?

Well, I always try to find an expert, a friend, a local contact, anyone who can tell me what the city or resort is really like, someone I trust who has no vested interests. And when it comes to Menorca, I'm that person.

I've holidayed here since the 1980s, lived here for years and I've walked, cycled or driven to just about every corner on this lesser-known Balearic Isle.

I won't deny my descriptions are subjective, but I can promise you an honest assessment of Menorca's highs and lows, and along the way, I hope to give you an insight beyond travel agents' blurb into what my adopted home is really like.
