This old stately home cleverly mixes a country feel with modern fittings; you can sleep in the main house, or in converted stables. Look out for the details: the waterwheel, the ancient bread oven, and the unexpected shrine in one room to name just a few. Dinner on the terrace is also a must, with only the countryside interrupting your meal.

2.  Port Ciudadella Hotel
Crisp, clean and contemporary, this low-rise hotel is a laid back setting for a city break. Ciutadella's a walk away, and so is the tiny town beach. The indoor pool and the spa mean you won't be bored on a rainy day, either.

3.  Biniarroca Hotel
There's nothing hotel-ish about this place, it's as if you're staying at a friend's country home. The décor is immaculate (the two owners are a creative pair: one's a designer; the other's an impressionist painter), and the patios, gardens and terraces make for one romantic dinner setting.

4.  Audax Spa and Wellness Hotel
I'm not normally a fan of high-rise hotels, but Audax remains a favourite as there's much more to the place than just your room. The spa is heavenly, the food beats most hotel buffets, and to burn it off, there are endless options - kayaking, walking, cycling - to ensure you see more of Cala Galdana than just a sun lounger.

5.  Finesse Villas
Self-catering and luxurious aren't words you often see together, but that's exactly what Finesse offers. These tip-top villas have superb views, fine furnishings, private pools (of a decent size, I might add), and are set discretely apart from their neighbours. If cooking's not your thing, they'll organise caters to come in of an evening too.

6.  La Quinta
A modern hotel and spa that offers a welcome dose of tranquillity compared to the chaos of the nearby resort. I prefer the ground floor rooms, as from the terrace the pool is just a quick sprint across the grass. ass.

7.  Club Almirante Farragut Hotel
Not an obvious choice, perhaps, given it's one of Menorca's old-school hotels, but every time I've stayed here I've had a fantastic break. The salt water pool and surrounding gardens are immaculate, the service is good and the tiny beach nearby is postcard material.

8.  Son Bou Gardens Apartment Complex
I have lost count of the times I've stayed here. I admit, these self-catering apartments are not going to win any prizes for luxury, but the entire resort - well-kept gardens, tennis court, choice of swimming pools and eateries where you won't get frowned at for bringing the kids - makes it ideal for a family friendly break.

9.  Sant Ignasi Hotel
What getting away from it all is about, Sant Ignasi is one swanky country home turned boutique hotel, with a tip-top restaurant thrown in for good measure. There's a new tennis court for energetic types too.

10.  Matchani Gran Hotel
It's worth every bump in the road to get here, this rural retreat refuses to shake off its agricultural roots as the antique decorations (and enormous room keys) reveal. The rooms mix classic furnishings with splashes of colour (pick the Coach House if you can), and I just love exploring the gardens of this working farm.
