A few kilometres separate Platges de Fornells (the beach resort) with Fornells (the port), and while they are close geographically, they are actually very far apart in style. Fornells is a protected bay that's popular with sailors, rich Catalans and the King of Spain (who often moors up outside his favourite restaurant to order Menorcan lobster stew, an island speciality that sends eyebrows arching when you find out its price). Platges de Fornells, meanwhile, is geared towards tourists, with stacks of whitewashed apartments jostling for a sea view, scattered between meticulously kept gardens.
The word 'tramuntana' makes a frequent appearance around the resort, in reference to the fierce north wind that batters Menorca's coastline - it's this reason why salt-sprayed apartment blocks might not appear as pristine as they could, as every winter they get beaten up by the elements. This doesn't alter the fact that resort is well designed, with a clever mix of steps, terraces and arches meaning that apartments maintain a sense of privacy.
There are many restaurants to choose from (but most lack the prestige of those in neighbouring Fornells). Reclau is the most well known; its terrace is reason enough to stop off. A little further north, if the sea is in a cooperative mood, waves roll back to reveal the remains of a ship wreak just metres from the coast. Hard as it might be to believe on a hot August day, this bay can be more of a foe than a friend to swimmers and sailors.
The beach, Cala Tirant, stretches west from Fornells, broken in two by a cliff face. Fortunately they've built some steps over the cliff so you can get to the other side (which is usually emptier) without having to swim.
