Situated on the southern coast of the island, Son Bou is an attractive resort which is popular with families and couples of all ages.

The main attraction of the resort is sure to be the beautiful sandy beach which is one of the longest on the island. The beach benefits from good facilities with nearby bars for refreshments and a selection of water sports for those feeling energetic. When the little ones aren't building sand castles on the beach there are a couple of play areas and a fun maze in the resort to keep them occupied.

The resort offers a good variety of shops and restaurants and although the night-life tends to be fairly quiet there are several bars, some offer entertainment and stay open til late.

Son Bou is situated approx 21km from the airport.

Your first glimpse of Son Bou is almost certainly going to be the worst one...

Your first glimpse of Son Bou is almost certainly going to be the worst one - once you descend down to the resort, two high rise hotels block the view of what is Menorca's longest beach.

Fortunately for us tourists, developers' vision of turning Son Bou into Menorca's version of Benidorm was scuppered when they discovered that the expanse of marshland behind the beach wasn't the best foundation for enormous hotels. So once you get past these two towers, everything else has been built with incredible taste: apartment complexes around lush gardens, luxurious villas and family-friendly low rise hotels.

Son Bou, and the resort of Torre Soli which extends to the west, knows how to keep everyone happy. On the beach, there are banana boats, pedalos and beach bars to keep the active and the hungry content, while those in search of an isolated patch of sand can walk away from the crowds - there are two miles of beach to share.

The resort doesn't disappoint either. Beyond the typical karaoke bars and tribute bands, highlights include a fun Hawaiian bar complete with waiters on roller skates, a bowling alley with a soft play area (there's disco bowling late at night), and a Cuban themed nightclub. Casa Andrés is a small restaurant that will not disappoint - Andrés has worked in Son Bou for decades, while the Italian ice cream parlour is another favourite stop off, both for ridiculously delicious cones, but also for decent caffeine-loaded espressos.

It's my duty to mention here that there is a general misconception that Son Bou's campsite is a short walk from the beach and the main resort. But it's not. It's not even a short cycle for that matter. It's at the top of a very steep hill, part of which doesn't even have pavement or street lighting. While I've nothing against the campsite as such - it's got a lovely big pool, plenty of pine trees creating the best shade imaginable for an afternoon nap, and the bar does a great paella - two weeks here without a car is not a good idea.
